Practical Experience for CISE Students

For undergraduate students in the Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering, hands-on experience is invaluable as a student, as a graduate in the job market, as a prospective graduate student, and later as a professional engineer.

Internships and co-ops

Internships and co-ops are career/major-related work experiences usually lasting one semester or longer if it is a co-op. These provide opportunities to experience future careers, test skills, learn new skills, and make important contacts. An internship can be paid or on a volunteer basis. Please speak with a CISE undergraduate advisor regarding obtaining course credit for an internship or co-op.

Career Showcase and CISE Career Fair

Career Showcase, sponsored by the UF Career Resource Center, provides students the opportunity to interact with prospective employers face-to-face who are seeking candidates for interns, co-ops, and full-time positions. The CISE department and the UF chapters of ACM and ASCIE host a similar event for CISE students only. Contact a CISE Undergraduate Advisor for information regarding the CISE Career Workshop.

Integrated Product and Process Design (IPPD) program

IPPD is an innovative educational initiative within the College of Engineering. Students work in multidisciplinary teams under the guidance of a faculty coach and industrial liaison engineers to design and build authentic industrial products and processes for sponsoring companies. This is a competitive, senior level program that is split between the Fall and Spring semesters of the same academic year. (1st semester = Design, 2nd semester = Build/Test)

University Scholars program

In the University Scholars program, students work one-on-one with UF faculty on a selected research project. Under college guidelines, students must be a sophomore, junior, or senior engineering student with a minimum 3.2 cumulative UF GPA. Students must meet the eligibility requirement at the time of application. University Scholars receive a research stipend and financial support for travel to a scholarly conference or to collect data

Undergraduate research

The University of Florida offers numerous opportunities for undergraduates to pursue research under the direction of a faculty member. These intensive research opportunities personalize the academic experience and challenge students to strengthen their writing and analytical skills. We encourage students to interact with faculty regarding interest in research.

Engineers Without Borders

Engineers without Borders is a non-profit organization that is sponsored by private and corporate donors. This program allows student engineers to travel to a developing country and work on a project that can help the quality of life of those living in the area. Students work on a project (generally takes a year) that has specific relevance to the community in an underdeveloped part of the world. The students travel there in two trips: the assessment and the implementation. Students are also involved in various educational and community ventures locally, so not to limit participation to those who can travel on out-of-country projects. All disciplines, majors, and backgrounds are welcome.
