COM 1000 Introduction to Communication Studies (3)
Introduces various theoretical perspectives for understanding human communication. (S)
ENC 1102 Introduction to Argument & Persuasion (3)
Prereq: ENC 1101. Writing techniques and forms of argument in a broad range of disciplines. For their major writing assignment in this course, students will write an extensively researched and well-documented research paper, learning professional and academic writing conventions and developing their critical thinking skills. ENC 3250 Professional Communication (3)
Prereq: junior/senior standing and two 1000/2000-level English courses. Professional writing course relevant in business, industry, government, and other institutional settings. Covers major elements of organizational communication with emphasis on composition of letters and memos, reports, proposals and manuals. (WR)
ENC 3310 Advanced Exposition (3)
Prereq: junior/senior standing and two 1000/2000-level English courses. Advanced composition course in methods of exposition: definition, classification, comparison and contrast, analysis, illustration and identification. (WR)
ENC 3312 Adv Argumentative Writing (3)
Prereq: junior/senior standing and two 1000/2000-level English courses. Advanced composition concerned with the writing of argument and critical analysis. (WR)
ENC 4212 Professional Editing (3)
Prereq: ENC 3250 or ENC 2210, and instructor permission. How to perform different levels of editing on a range of professional texts, including both printed and online texts as well as both technical and literary ones.
ENC 4260 Advanced Professional Writing (3)
Prereq: ENC 2210, ENC 3250, or instructor permission. Administrative communication, professional papers, research reports, proposals, and other major professional documents, depending on the needs of the students who must have developed communication skills. (WR)
SPC 2300 Introduction to Interpersonal Communication (3)
Studies how two people interact with one another and how factors such as listening skills, gender and culture influence that communication. (S)
SPC 2351 Listening (3)
Theory and practice in responsible, participatory listening. Also includes principles of listening for both literal comprehension and critical evaluation of ideas in response to various spoken and nonverbal messages.
SPC 2594 Intercollegiate Forensics (1)
Prereq: satisfactory completion of one semester of intercollegiate forensics participation at UF. Participation in intercollegiate debate and individual speaking.
SPC 2608 Introduction to Public Speaking (3)
Theory and practice in presenting public speeches, determination of communication purpose(s), and adapting to organization, evidence, language, and other message characteristics for designated audiences.
SPC 3331 Nonverbal Communication (3)
Prereq: COM 1000. Surveys theory and research in nonverbal communication including eye behavior, facial expressions, gestures, and vocal cues.
SPC 3602 Advanced Public Speaking (3)
Prereq: SPC 2600, or equivalent. Studies principles and methods of selected forms of public speaking for various purposes, audiences, and contexts.
SPC 4425 Small Group Communication (3)
Prereq: COM 1000.Communication in small groups with emphasis in practical applications, skill development, and current research and theory.
SPC 4680 Rhetorical Criticism (3).
Critical analyses of rhetorical elements and processes in oratorical and non-oratorical forms.
SPC 4710 Patterns of Intercultural Communication (3)
Prereq: COM 1000, or equivalent. Explores practices and difficulties of communication between and among people of contrasting cultures. Includes investigation of theory & research by which intercultural communication problems can be mitigated. (N and S) (WR)
