Alex Shaw, a Ph.D. student at the University of Florida’s Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering, won the best student paper award for “Comparing Human and Machine Recognition of Children’s Touchscreen Gestures” at the 19th Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) International Conference on Multimodal Interaction (ICMI).
The paper compares human and machine recognition of children’s touchscreen gestures. Shaw is a member of the Intelligent Natural Interaction Technology (INIT) lab, which is supervised by Lisa Anthony, Ph.D., an assistant professor. Jaime Ruiz, Ph.D., an assistant professor, collaborated on the paper as well.
“Working on this project has helped me to better understand the ways that humans perceive gestures, which has led to some interesting discoveries on what kinds of gestures humans confuse. I look forward to applying this information to automated algorithms to improve recognition,” Shaw said.
