University of Florida assistant professor Alexandre Gomes de Siqueira, in the Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering, is co-supervising new interdisciplinary research exploring the application of generative artificial intelligence in journalism.
The collaborative efforts between UF and Brazil’s Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU) highlight how global partnerships can drive innovation in emerging fields.
Conducted under guidance from UFU professors Pedro Franklin and Marcelo Marques, the research investigates Prompt Journalism — an experimental approach that tasks journalists with using AI as a collaborator to write prompts, analyze responses and refine content in real time. The framework fosters a dialogue with AI that is conversational, interactive and technologically supported, ultimately improving the quality of news production and information consumption.
In May, the collaboration earned top recognition at INTERCOM, the largest communication congress in Latin America and hosted by the Brazilian Society of Interdisciplinary Studies in Communication. Gustavo Henrique de Souza Medrado, a master’s degree student at UFU co-advised by Siqueira, won first place in the INTERCOM Communication Award for Social Transformation for his work in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil.
“This achievement reflects not only the quality of the research but also the power of international academic collaboration, as the partnership between UFU and UF made it possible to advance knowledge that combats informational disorder and promotes more informed societies,” said Gomes de Siqueira.
This recognition underscores the potential of interdisciplinary and international partnerships and highlights the evolving role of AI in shaping the future of journalism and the dissemination of information worldwide.
