Howard W. Beck

Dr. Howard Beck is a Professor at the University of Florida. His expertise is in computer science, with focus on database management and artificial intelligence, including computational linguistics. His home department is the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department, and he works with several departments and colleges at the University of Florida in designing and developing databases for organizing knowledge and information within a variety of domains. His research involves the use of description logics and ontologies as a basis for database management. He has developed an ontology management system called Lyra based on these principles. His work in the UF College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has produced numerous digital libraries and decision support systems including EDIS, SPDN, DDIS, FAWN, the Southern Trees project, and several eLearning systems. He has recently developed the OntoSim system, an environment for ontology-based simulation of physical and biological systems. He is also an associate with the UF Center for Latin American Studies and has developed a linguistic database for supporting the Aymara language project.

Dr. Beck received a Bachelor's degree in both philosophy and electrical engineering, and a Master's degree in electrical engineering at the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Florida.
