1st International Workshop on Robustness and Stability
of Biological Systems and Computational Solutions

to be held in conjunction with ACM BCB 2012

October 7, 2012.
Orlando, FL

In several research areas, such as computational biology, problems are modeled using a mathematical optimization criteria, such as likelihood under a model. In many situations, the configuration of the solution is at least as important as the objective value. This effect is more visible in covering and tree reconstruction problems where a parsimony or likelihood object is being optimized and there may be several optimal solutions to a problem. While the optimization criteria provide a goodness measure based on the model, they tend to ignore the stability in the structure of the solution. In some areas, such questions have been tackled using tools like bootstrapping and jackknifing. Instances of such problems, typically, do not represent the complete picture. As a consequence, the algorithms make the best use of the input.
Our goal is to bring together researchers from these, and other areas of computational biology where techniques are being developed to study and stability of biological systems and computational solutions. Further, we wish to raise awareness to the issues of stability in all areas of biology.
