Dr. Jorg Peters
is Professor of Computer and Information Sciences at University of Florida.
Dr Peters was born in Germany.
He received his undergraduate degree(s) in
computer sciences, business and economics from the Technische Hoschschule
Darmstadt, Germany in 1983, after serving in the army from 1980 to 1982
(by invitation = draft) where he got to blow things up and put them back
together, cover them with mud and clean them afterwards.
Studying in Madison Wi, initially with a Fulbright Scholarship,
Dr. Peters obtained his Ph.D. in 1990 in Computer Sciences from
the University of Wisconsin, Carl de Boor advisor.
In 1991 and 1992, Dr Peters held positions at the
IBM T. J. Watson Research Center and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
before moving to the computer science department of Purdue University.
In 1994, Dr. Peters received a National Young Investigator Award.
He was tenured at Purdue University in 1997 and moved to the University
of Florida in 1998 where he became full professor.
Dr Peters is interested in representing, analyzing and computing with geometry.
To this end he has developed new tools for free-form modeling and design
in spline, Bezier, subdivision and implicit representations.
Dr. Peters serves as associate editor for the journal CAGD, APNUM and
ACM ToG and on program committees (see http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~jorg).
His students have built such useful tools as BezierView and TIPS.
For me the pursuit of knowledge is interesting, bcause
we strife to simplify knowledge by abstracting it, ie giving it
structure. Also, we get to constantly question our results
(and our selves). That is a good practice.
Practically, I started on research by working for a summer with
a professor on a then new `graphics workstation'. He gave me a
technical report to implement. The paper was originally in A4 (European
format, lightly longer) but was copied to US letters format.
So that the page numbers were missing.
I had trouble implementing the algorithm -- and finally came up with my
own solution. Later, the professor noticed that the had pulled out
one page of the paper -- the most important one.
My solution was different than the one proposed in the paper
and became my first publication.
