Description

Requests the purchase of a system to provide virtual machine environments remotely across the internet to students equipped with a web browser. The web browser interface provides access to the desktop of a virtual machine in a "pod," or network of virtual machines, that is accessible only to that student. The system supports allocating lab time to students so they can check out pods for access according to the lab schedule.

This system is needed in order to be able to teach Cybersecurity classes in which use of normal internet connected resources would be potenially harmful (either because of possibly dangerous network scans or due to the possibility of spreading malware to unintended target machines).

A Student Activities Fee proposal has been funded in the amount of $25,910 to support purchase of this system. This proposal expands the system to allow it to support greater student access (more pods and virtual machines) so that it can be used for classes other than just the security classes it was proposed for. In particular, this proposal (Part 1 of 2 parts) upgrades the NDG Netlab server so to be the Enterprise Edition rather than the Academy Edition, so it will support more pods and virtual machines. If the system performs well, we request that Part 2 (which expands the support for providing VM hosts) be funded.

Items Requested:

Total Price: $19,888 ($45,798 less $25,910 from Student Tech Fee funds)
