Overview
Web caching is the temporary storage of web objects for later retrieval. There are three significant advantages to Web caching: reduced bandwidth consumption, reduced server load, and reduced latency. Together, they make the Web less expensive and better performing. There is a fair amount of research and developments on Web cahing for wired Internet access. In a wireless and mobile network, the movement of mobile users presents a new scenario of access to the Internet that is substantially different from the wired network. Mobile users expect and demand the same high web performance at their home network, while mobile, and when they return. Exisiting web caching mechanisms do not support this notion of ubiquity. The Ubiquitous Web caching project is focused on developing adequate web caching solutions to the mobile user.
