Grading:
- Homeworks: 30%.
- Two Midterms: 35% each. The first midterm will in all likelihood
be held on Thursday, October 15th, 2009. Time: TBA (but most likely
from 6PM onward). The second midterm will be held on Wednesday,
December 9th, 2009. Time: TBA (but most likely from 6PM onward).

- Prerequisites: Basic calculus and probability
theory
- Homeworks/programs
will be assigned bi-weekly. Please use MATLAB
for the programming exercises.

Syllabus
- Linear Algebra and Vector Spaces:
matrix algebra, eigenvectors, singular value decomposition (SVD),
norms, determinants, subspaces
- Probability Theory: Functions
of a random variable, moments, distances between distributions, basic
inference
- Information Theory: Convexity, Jensen's inequality,
entropy, maximum entropy principle
- Curves and Surfaces: Frenet frames, fundamental
forms, curvature
