Eakta Jain, Ph.D.

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (SIGGRAPH) has elected Eakta Jain, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering, as the new chair of the SIGGRAPH executive committee.

Jain’s vision for the SIGGRAPH committee includes vibrancy, sustainability and member wellness. She hopes to continue the momentum of the committee with a focus on innovation, membership growth and adaptability. During her role as executive committee chair, she hopes that SIGGRAPH can play a role in tackling the issues that come with the stress members face from work, performance and outcome demands.

“I have been involved with SIGGRAPH since 2007 in various capacities, as a technical paper author, reviewer, member of the international program committee for the flagship SIGGRAPH conference and technical program chair for specialized conferences in my area of expertise. I am excited to continue my work with SIGGRAPH in my new role and look forward to what we can accomplish together,” Jain said.

SIGGRAPH is one of the most notable special interest groups in ACM. The committee was integral in the advancement of graphics processing units (GPUs), which aided in the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. SIGGRAPH has also hosted many prominent tech giants as speakers and panelists, such as Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, Dario Gil, senior vice president and director of research at IBM, and Kathy Kleinman, a modern pioneer for women in computing.

SIGGRAPH is responsible for simulating reality or portions of reality through computer graphics with the use of audio, visual and haptic elements. These simulations are then applied in areas including entertainment, education, computer science, digital arts and many more. These areas touch the lives of not only scientists, researchers and technical professionals, but also casual users as well.
