Congratulations to Kevin R.B. Butler, Ph.D., a CISE professor and director of the Florida Institute for Cybersecurity Research, who was recently appointed to the 2023 council for the Computing Community Consortium (CCC). Dr. Butler was one of five members recently appointed to the CCC, whose mission is to enable the pursuit of innovative, high-impact computing research that aligns with pressing national and global challenges.
Dr. Butler joined the University of Florida in 2014 as part of the Rising to National Preeminence Hiring Program and was the Arnold and Lisa Goldberg Rising Star Associate Professor in Computer Science prior to his promotion to Professor. His research focuses on the security of computing devices, systems, and networks. He received a National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2013 and was named International Educator of the Year within the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering in 2017 for his work on developing global standards for securing digital financial services in the developing world. He is the current co-chair of the International Telecommunication Union’s Security, Infrastructure, and Trust Working Group as part of the Financial Inclusion Global Initiative. He is also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association for Computing Machinery. Additionally, he is the technical program co-chair of the 2022 USENIX Security Symposium and conference general chair for Annual Computer Security Applications Conference (ACSAC) 2020 and ACSAC 2021. He is also an affiliate faculty member of the Center for Children and Families within UF’s Levin College of Law.
Dr. Butler’s membership will begin on July 1, and he will serve for three terms. The CCC Council is comprised of 23 members who have expertise in diverse areas of computing. The goal of the CCC is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer-range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives.
