Dear colleagues, alumni and friends,
With the semester coming to an end, I wanted to share some stories that came out of our department these last few months.
This fall, the department celebrated our faculty working at the Florida Institute for Cybersecurity Research for receiving a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study and thwart surveillanceware. Another faculty member is exploring ways to increase the trustworthiness and interpretability of artificial machine learning in healthcare under a new $1.2 million grant from the NSF. We also congratulated a faculty member who is expected to receive the 2022 AAAI/EAAI Outstanding Educator award for her work with the Artificial Intelligence for K-12 Initiative.
After many years devoted to teaching and research at the University of Florida, one of our faculty was named a Distinguished Professor. And another faculty member has accepted an invitation from the Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to serve as a standing member of the Biodata Management and Analysis (BDMA) Study Section.
Our biannual CISE Career Fair took place in September and early October. This year, we decided to hold an in-person and a virtual career fair, and we had a great turnout for both events. We hope to have similar success for our Spring CISE Career Fairs on January 24, 2022, (in-person) and January 31, 2022 (virtual).
This was an eventful semester, and we’re looking forward to a great spring.
Sincerely,
Juan E. Gilbert, Ph.D.
