With a career already filled with accolades and honors, Juan Gilbert, Ph.D., was recently elected to membership in the National Academy of Artificial Intelligence, or NAAI.
Gilbert is the Andrew Banks Family Preeminence Endowed Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering, or CISE.
The NAAI is an international scientific organization dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence, scientific innovation, interdisciplinary research and global academic collaboration.
Gilbert received this distinction in part for his “meaningful achievements and sustained contributions to the advancement of artificial intelligence,” said Michael Chu, the NAAI secretariat. “Gilbert’s election to the NAAI is a recognition of his academic accomplishments, professional excellence and his impact within the global AI community.”
Gilbert, a former CISE department chair, directs the Computing for Social Good Lab and focuses much of his research on designing, building and evaluating computational technologies as they relate to the human condition and reflecting on how these technologies affect society. His lab examines voting and election technologies, fairness and bias in AI, advanced learning technologies, ethnocomputing, privacy/security and the usability and accessibility of computing systems.
It was Gilbert’s work in election security that led to his being honored by President Joe Biden at the White House in October of 2023. Gilbert received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation for pioneering a universal voting system that makes voting more reliable and accessible for everyone while increasing diversity in the computer science workforce.
